Yesterday, I was cooking breakfast and vibing to my hip-hop mix on my iPod. It has a lot of my 90’s and early 2000’s favorites from Talib, Common, Kanye West, Mos Def, and people like that. The song that really made me smile though was a song called “I Can” off Nas’ album God’s Son. On the hook, a bunch of kids were saying “I know I can be what I wanna be. If I work hard at it, I’ll be where I wanna be.” Where did we lose the ability to dream? Why are kids so sure of their ability to be anything from a police officer to an astronaut to a doctor to an NBA star but we give up? Hard work beats out talent any day of the week. If you want it, go for it. If you don’t want it, settle. I’m going for it.
