If you know me, you know I’m an ambitious individual. My entire life, I’ve found ways to do everything by myself. I never thought I needed anyone and, if I found that someone wasn’t keeping up with their end of the bargain, I’d just pick up their slack. So I never learned to ask for help. Problem with that is, in the professional world, you need to be able to say “I can’t do this alone” without feeling like you’re a failure. Today, I learned that just because a project is assigned to you doesn’t mean you have to do it all by yourself. Trying to do that will have you overwhelmed and underperforming. That’s not what you need when it comes to professional development. So learn to let people know, in a confident fashion, that you can and will ask for help. It will only make you look more competent and effective in the long run.
