Most of my posts are for young professionals but this one is for those who are seasoned.
In 1995, it made sense to ask your assistant to find something in your e-mail for you or remind you of something. But now, in 2016, if you are the owner of a smartphone, you can do so much for yourself. In the time it takes you to pick up the phone and call your assistant to ask, “What’s the number to Staples?”, you could have typed the word “Staples” into the address bar. I know, as a seasoned executive, you’re not used to doing work for yourself and I cannot really blame you for it. You’ve been doing the same thing for 30+ years. But I’m a firm believer that mind is over matter. Let go of your muscle memory. You must do for yourself. Learn more about your technology (Tip: Apple users, sign up for a free class at the Apple Store. It’s a good investment of your time.). Then you can delegate more important tasks that require real thought to a human.
Make professional development a priority.
