The (Limited) Exception to the Rule

Yesterday, I started my new position.  The day before that, I updated my LinkedIn profile.  How did I do that?   The rule is not to put a simple job description on a résumé, right?  Right… except when it makes sense to.  97% of the time, you should have figures and compelling verbiage on your résumé and LinkedIn profile that differentiate you from the rest of those in your field.  But, when you’ve just started the job, there is no way to provide substantial numbers.  So, for a month or two, you’ll need a filler on your LinkedIn page.  That filler, unfortunately, has to come from the job description.  The good thing is that lack of a quality description should be motivation for you to go ahead and work your backside off so that you can put up some qualitative and quantitative points that you’re proud of.

And, while you’re at it, look to see if your profile picture is outdated.  For me, facial hair is an “Am I in the mood for it?” thing.  But, if you’ve just started in an industry where facial hair or liberal hairstyles are unacceptable, strongly consider changing your LinkedIn headshot (and the ones on all other social media as well).  Before anyone reads enough into your brand do discern something from it, they will see it.  What do you want them to see?

There you have it.  I’ve given you permission to break a LinkedIn rule of mine.  But get to the job, learn, and hit the ground running so you can get back to following the guidelines.
