What Are You Building?

“What you build touches everything you do.” — Scott Harmon, Partner at Center Studio Architecture

Yesterday, Scott and I met for lunch for the first time, joined by Victor who introduced us. We met to develop a relationship between my school and Center Studio Architecture but I gained a ton of wisdom from Scott about how exactly architecture affects life and business and I came away with the above quote, which is so much bigger than just the building in which your business is housed.

Whatever you develop, whatever you put your name on, whatever you invest your life’s work in, make sure that it speaks to that which you want to touch. I raise money for educational institutions because I care about the quality of education that children and young people receive. I want to build a legacy that reflects my love for learning. That is one aspect of what will be seen when I’m gone and my life is reflected on. What will people see that you have built?

At the end of our meeting, though we were meeting about architecture, Scott said to me “This is not just about architecture.” He was right. It is about building a brand that, in all aspects, both visual and intrinsic, that speaks to everything you do.

Make professional development a priority.
