Set Aside Time

Yesterday, I was talking to a friend and she said she blocks the first 30 minutes of her work day and the final 30 minutes of her work day. It keeps her from having any 8:00 AM meetings and any 4:30 meetings that may go until 5:27 PM.

Today, I implemented that. Tomorrow, I have an 8:15 AM meeting but, from Friday going forward, my work calendar will say busy from 8:00 until 8:30 and the same from 4:30 until 5:00. There is no reason to start or end your day in meetings that aren’t that important and that will cause stress you don’t need.

You have to protect your sanity. When you get to work, go through e-mails. Say a prayer or meditate. Make a cup of coffee. Look over the office newsletter. But don’t walk in and fully engage. And, on the other end, don’t walk out with work on your mind. Wind down at the end of every day. Clear off your desk. Wash your coffee mug. Respond to those e-mails you forgot to get to earlier. Say a prayer or meditate.

And remember, unless you’re a doctor or in a position to save lives, your job is never worth allowing your mental or physical health to decline.

Make self care a priority.
